Security Council Holds Emergency Meeting Amid Escalating US-Venezuela Tensions
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Sputnik via Mehr News Agency, the UN Security Council will convene today to discuss rising tensions between Venezuela and the U.S.
A Security Council source told Sputnik that Venezuela requested this meeting and has gained support from Russia and China.
The emergency session follows a series of maritime confrontations between U.S. forces and Venezuelan boats near Venezuela’s coast, which have intensified regional tensions.
Turkey’s TRT network reported that Venezuela submitted its request on Thursday in a letter addressed to Vasily Nebenzya, Russia’s ambassador to the UN and current president of the security Council.
In its letter, Venezuela accused then-U.S. president Donald Trump’s administration of attempting to overthrow Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and endangering regional and international peace, security, and stability.
The Maduro government also warned of a potential imminent attack against the country.
This request came one day after U.S. Congress members voted down a bill that would have limited Trump’s authority to use deadly military force against drug traffickers.
Since increasing its naval presence in the region due to what Trump called “armed conflict” with drug trafficking groups, the U.S. military carried out four deadly strikes in the Caribbean.
However, Maduro’s administration claims that Washington is using drug trafficking as a pretext for these operations.
