U.S. Senate Fails Again to Stop Government Shutdown
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency, Al Jazeera reported that after the U.S. Senate failed to approve a government funding bill, the federal government shutdown continues.
This marks yet another occasion where the Senate could not pass the proposed financial package aimed at ending the federal shutdown.
The ongoing disagreement has prolonged the crisis, which began several weeks ago.
In this context, James Michael Johnson, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, said Tuesday night regarding the prolonged government closure caused by partisan deadlock over funding: “Democrats have an chance to change their minds and end this shutdown. They want to legalize undocumented immigrants and undo all reforms made by Republicans.”
He added: “The Democrats delaying this budget bill want $25 billion of taxpayers’ money allocated for international projects. We want to keep the government functioning and review the budget bill for passage.”
As an inevitable result of continued shutdown-related financial strain on many federal employees and military personnel, some free food distribution centers across America have seen a 30 percent increase in visitors.
The U.S. government shut down on October 1 due to political disputes between Republicans and Democrats in Congress and has now been closed for about two weeks.Democrats are demanding guarantees regarding healthcare subsidies while Republican lawmakers and the White House accuse them of encouraging illegal immigration.
The failure in negotiations has led former President Donald Trump and Republican leaders to threaten that back pay might not be provided to nearly 75,000 federal employees affected by delayed salaries. The shutdown also impacts other aspects of daily life including air travel, national parks operations, and nutrition programs such as WIC (Women, Infants, and Children).
