Risk of Direct US-Russia Confrontation If Tomahawks Sent to Kyiv
The English section of webangah News Agency, quoting Mehr News Agency, reports that the New York Times highlighted comments by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding a potential approval to sell long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine. The newspaper noted this decision could bring the United States one step closer to confrontation with Russia.
Trump recently stated, “Zelensky wants Tomahawks. We have plenty of Tomahawks.” According to the New York Times, this is exactly the message Ukrainian President volodymyr zelensky is eager to hear as he prepares for his meeting with Trump at the White House on Friday.
Though, this response also aligns with warnings from Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has insisted that supplying such weapons to Ukraine would mark a shift into a “new phase” of war.
The New York times wrote: “TrumpS threats to supply Tomahawks for Ukraine-whether followed through or not-reflect his growing desperation toward Putin; someone who has refused surrender or compromise despite Trump’s high-profile diplomatic efforts.”
The U.S. Department of Defence has drafted plans that would provide or sell Tomahawks to Ukraine pending Trump’s approval. Yet delivering these weapons presents meaningful challenges-particularly as Ukraine currently lacks both naval and land-based launchers capable of firing these missiles.
According to the New York Times, Ukraine would require an American military launcher called “Storm” in order to launch and fire Tomahawks. Should this happen, U.S. military officials warn it would bring America closer toward direct conflict with Russia. It remains unclear how many Tomahawk missiles exist in U.S. stockpiles, how Ukraine could safely store them, and what limited impact their numbers might have on the ongoing war.
