Russian Foreign Ministry Issues Statement on the Expiration of Resolution 2231
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing mehr News Agency and Al mayadeen, the Russian Foreign ministry announced today, Friday, that Moscow continues to commit to a political and diplomatic resolution regarding Iran’s (peaceful) nuclear program. Cooperation between Russia and Iran following the expiration of Resolution 2231 will adhere to Russian laws and international obligations.
The ministry added that the comprehensive strategic partnership treaty between Russia and Iran forms a solid foundation in this regard. It called on relevant parties to concentrate their efforts on preventing new escalations of tension and expressed readiness to facilitate this with all available means.
According to RIA Novosti, Moscow further stated that European attempts within the nuclear agreement framework to reimpose UN Security Council sanctions on Iran-previously lifted under Resolution 2231-have failed.
Resolution 2231 endorses the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action signed in 2015 by key international stakeholders.
Enacted on October 18, 2015, this resolution’s ten-year validity period ends tommorow, Saturday. Following its expiration, all arms and missile restrictions outlined therein will be lifted under international law. Therefore,recent claims by the European troika seeking to maintain certain restrictions lack legal standing internationally and are deemed unlawful.
