Portugal Bans Face Coverings in Public Places
According to the English section of webangah news agency, citing Mehr News Agency and The Guardian, Portugal’s parliament has approved a bill banning face coverings in public spaces for “gender or religious” reasons.
The proposal, put forward by the far-right Chega party, prohibits wearing coverings such as the burqa and niqab in most public places. face coverings will remain permitted on airplanes, in diplomatic buildings, and religious sites.
The bill sets fines for violations ranging from 200 to 4,000 euros. it still requires approval from Portugal’s President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who can veto it or refer it to the Constitutional Court for review.
If enacted, Portugal would join other European countries like Austria, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands that have partially or fully banned face veils and hijabs.
