Will the Gaza Ceasefire Close International Cases Against Israel?
The English section of webangah News Agency reports, citing Mehr News Agency and Deutsche Welle, that under the US-backed Gaza ceasefire agreement, Gaza will be governed by a technocratic governance. The Palestinian Authority, wich controls the occupied West Bank, will not be allowed to participate in this government untill it implements reforms outlined in various proposals, including former President Trump’s 2020 peace plan.
In the 2020 peace plan, the United States stated that it would not recognize a Palestinian state provided that there was a “legal war against Israel,” a point Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu raised during his visit to Washington last month.
According to Netanyahu’s demands,”real reforms” by the Palestinian Authority must mean an end to “the legal war against Israel” at both the International Criminal Court (ICC) and International Court of Justice (ICJ),two international tribunals handling cases against Israel.
Will the Ceasefire affect Cases Against Israel?
As part of the Gaza ceasefire deal, Netanyahu insisted that the Palestinian Authority withdraw its case brought before the ICC. However, it is not only this body filing lawsuits against Israel at international forums.
Even before the recent Gaza conflict, Palestine had requested that ICC examine conditions in Gaza. These are known as “referrals” submitted to the court.
The Palestinian Authority formally referred its case concerning Israel to the ICC in 2018. Since 2021, investigations into this matter have been ongoing. These inquiries focus on alleged violations dating back to 2014 and previously centered on settlement expansion in the West Bank prior to Hamas’s attack in October 2023.
In November 2023, other countries-including South Africa, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Chile and Mexico-joined this ICC case stating that they believe Palestine’s initial referral warrants further investigation.
Human rights organizations have also joined proceedings at the ICC. In late September 2025 (sic),Reporters Without Borders filed five complaints accusing Israeli forces of deliberately targeting Palestinian journalists with killings reported at The Hague court.
Earlier this October (sic), Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni told reporters she and other ministers face accusations of “complicity in genocide” at ICC due to Italy supplying weapons used by Israel.
This means that regardless of actions taken by Palestine’s leadership under current agreements with Israel and others involved internationally will ensure these legal cases continue under existing laws autonomous of PA decisions.
