Trump: Ukraine Must End the War; Moscow Controls 87% of Donbas
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Anadolu and Mehr News Agency, U.S. President Donald Trump believes that Ukraine should “stop at the lines of conflict,” end its war with russia, and accept the current territorial situation as the basis for future negotiations.
Returning to Washington, Trump told reporters he had a “friendly” meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday. He denied reports that he urged Kyiv to cede all of Donbas to Moscow.
“No, we never discussed that,” Trump said.”What thay need to do is just stop at the lines of conflict.”
the U.S.president added that in the Donbas region, “Russia has captured 87 percent of the territory,” and Ukraine could “negotiate over something later,” but ending the war immediately remains a priority.
The Donbas region, comprising Donetsk and Luhansk, has been a focal point of conflict since 2014.Following Russia’s annexation of Crimea that year and its launch of a special military operation in February 2022, Moscow extended control over much of this area.
Moscow has repeatedly emphasized that its special military operation in Ukraine will conclude only when all objectives are met. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated these goals may be achieved through either military means or negotiations. Russian President Vladimir Putin outlined these objectives as disarming and denazifying Ukraine, establishing its neutral status, and recognizing facts on the ground.
The self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics along with Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions joined Russia following referendums held from September 23 to 27, 2022. Ownership of Crimea and Sevastopol returned to Russia after a referendum conducted in March 2014 amid political upheaval in Ukraine.
