Japan Government Resigns
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Russia Al-Youm via Mehr News Agency, Japan’s cabinet headed by Prime minister Shigeru Ishiba has resigned.
The Prime Minister announced his resignation on September 6 after weeks of mounting pressure to step down during a press conference.
Ishiba stated, “I deeply hope that members of the Liberal Democratic Party can overcome the serious divide within the party.” He described his decision to resign as challenging.
He noted that he had been considering stepping down since last year’s elections but had been deliberating on the appropriate timing for his resignation.
According to Ishiba, after observing concrete results regarding a trade agreement with the United States, he felt able to announce his resignation.
Earlier, Japan’s National Broadcasting Association (NHK) reported that Ishiba decided to resign in order to avoid deepening divisions within the ruling Liberal Democratic Party.
The coalition led by Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party has lost its majority in both houses of parliament amid voter frustration over rising living costs as Ishiba took office.
Ishiba assumed office last October and had resisted increasing calls from mainly right-wing party opponents for more than a month before accepting responsibility through resignation.
Liberal Democratic Party lawmakers are scheduled to vote tomorrow on holding an unusual election-a move that would effectively represent a vote of no confidence against him if approved.
Ishiba’s government finalized details last week regarding a trade agreement with the United States.
