Hungary Will Not Block Brussels’ New Sanctions Package Against Russia
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News agency and TASS, Hungary’s Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó stated that Budapest does not intend to prevent the EU’s decision to impose its 19th sanctions package on Moscow.
Responding to a question on this issue, Szijjártó told Euractiv news, “We do not intend to block it.”
He added that budapest has received exemptions for “all measures conflicting with Hungary’s national interests” within the new restrictions against Russia.
The Hungarian foreign minister also said in response to questions about Hungary’s role in negotiations concerning new anti-Russian actions that Budapest does not support “nonsense efforts” and expressed confidence that “Brussels’ sanction policy against Moscow has failed.”
In September, the European Commission promised to adopt the 19th sanctions package against Russia but failed due to disagreements among EU member states.
European sources say reaching an agreement on sanctions at the upcoming foreign ministers’ meeting remains unlikely. The matter is expected to be deferred until the summit scheduled for October 23-24.
