Sarkozy Begins Serving Prison Sentence

Former French President Surrenders to Paris Prison to Begin Five-Year‌ Sentence

according to‌ the English‌ section of webangah News Agency, citing ⁢Mehr ‍News Agency and France 24, Nicolas ⁢Sarkozy, the former president of France, has entered La Santé ‌prison in ‌Paris today to serve a five-year sentence.

The ⁣former French leader was convicted in a case involving Libyan‍ financing of his 2007 presidential campaign. Sarkozy will ⁣be the first former head of‌ state from a European Union member country to serve time‍ behind bars.

Sarkozy served as president from 2007 until 2012. In late September, he⁢ was found guilty on⁤ charges of criminal conspiracy related to receiving funding from muammar Gaddafi, LibyaS ‍former ⁤dictator, for his 2007 election campaign. He was sentenced to five years in prison.

The conviction stems from allegations that Sarkozy illegally received millions of euros from Gaddafi’s regime. According to French prosecutors cited by France 24, Sarkozy promised Gaddafi that he woudl support efforts to improve‍ Libya’s image among Western nations‍ in exchange for campaign funding.

The ex-president has appealed the verdict and ‍described it as “unfair.” AFP reported‍ that an official at La ⁤Santé prison indicated Sarkozy is highly likely‍ to be⁢ held ‌in a nine-square-meter solitary cell.

Russia Today added that⁤ due to security concerns,he will‍ serve⁢ his sentence separated from ⁢other inmates.
