Mohammed Omran and Talib Mukhhamara: The Story of Two Freed Palestinian Prisoners
According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency via Al Jazeera, Mohammad Omran is a Palestinian detainee who was exiled along with other prisoners to Egypt. When his sister, Ibtisam Omran, first saw his name on the initial list of prisoners set to be released under the prisoner exchange agreement between Israel and Hamas, she was overjoyed. however, when final lists were published, it became clear that Mohammad would be exiled and would not return to his hometown.
mohammad’s mother passed away from grief some time after his arrest, while their father died three years ago. Born in 1982, Mohammad was captured on February 19, 2002, during an ambush near Al-Fawwar refugee camp as he returned home from work at a factory in Hebron. He endured severe interrogation and torture by Israeli soldiers.During trial proceedings, he was sentenced to thirteen life terms.
Mohammad’s brother raed has also spent five years imprisoned by Israel. Raed said Israeli forces raided their family home and threatened them not to hold any celebrations or gatherings. he added that their family’s happiness hinges on securing freedom for all high-sentence Palestinian prisoners-and ultimately seeing Mohammad reunited with them in the West Bank.
Mohammad joined the Islamic Jihad movement’s Al-Quds Brigades during the start of the second Intifada in 2000 as a combatant. He participated in multiple operations against Israeli forces and settlers-most notably an operation in Hebron’s Old City neighborhood of Wadi al-Nisari.
The Al-Quds Brigades stated that in an operation carried out on November 15, 2002 by Mohammad Omran alongside Nour Jaber, Jihad ubeidoh, and Jabara al-Razem-12 Israeli soldiers including commanders stationed in Hebron were killed while 15 others were injured. Mohammad had spent nine months carefully surveilling and fully mapping out the area prior to this mission.
Taleb Mukhameireh Sentenced to Seven Life Terms
Taleb Mukhameireh is another Palestinian prisoner who gained freedom through this exchange deal with Israel.born in Yatta-a southern West Bank town-in 1970-he began resisting occupation early as a member of Fatah’s military wing within its national liberation movement framework.
Mukhameireh was arrested on October 16, 2002 during the Second Intifada as part of a militant unit operating under Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades banner responsible for several attacks against occupiers southern Hebron resulting in deaths and injuries among Israeli forces.
The Israeli military court sentenced him after extensive interrogation and torture at Ofer Prison west of Ramallah alongside fellow detainees-handing down seven life sentences.
Taleb’s son Moayad says his father has been frequently transferred between various prisons inside Israel where he endured multiple stints of solitary confinement; he also participated several hunger strikes-including one lasting forty-four days back in 2018.
moayad reports that fellow prisoners nicknamed Taleb “the surgeon” due to his expertise repairing communication devices smuggled into prisons-a skill linked back to his profession before detention where he worked as an automobile mechanic.
