US Secretary of State Levels Accusations Against Iran in Talks with Iraqi Prime Minister
The US Department of State announced a phone conversation between US secretary of State Marco Rubio and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al Sudani, reported by webangah News Agency citing Mehr News Agency and Al Jazeera.
During the call, Rubio discussed efforts to finalize US commercial contracts in Iraq with the prime minister.
Rubio claimed that Iran-backed militias in Iraq are undermining the contry’s sovereignty and emphasized the need to disarm these groups.
The US secretary further alleged that these militias threaten the lives and livelihoods of both Americans and Iraqis.
He also asserted without evidence that Iran-supported militias loot Iraqi resources for Iran’s benefit.
It is noteworthy that Washington has recently intensified attempts to disarm Iraqi resistance groups, while these groups strongly resist such pressures. They consider maintaining their arms an essential part of their regional deterrence strategy against both the United States and Israel.
