Istanbul Governor Imposes Espionage Charges on Erdogan’s Political Rival Imamoglu

The Turkish government’s ‍prosecutor’s office has leveled new charges, ‌including espionage, against Akram davutoglu, an opponent of President Recep ​Tayyip⁢ Erdogan.

According‌ to ⁢the ⁣English section of ‍ webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and the news site ⁤Russia Today, Istanbul’s ‌prosecutor’s ⁢office has announced new investigations into‍ Ekrem Imamoglu, former‍ mayor‍ of Istanbul. The ⁣probe addresses ‍fresh ⁢allegations including “espionage.”

The Istanbul prosecutor’s report⁢ states that the ⁢investigation focuses on Imamoglu’s “connections with ⁣foreign intelligence agencies” ⁢and the “strategic nature of his election campaign.” It reviews⁤ some of his activities as‌ potential spying on behalf of foreign countries.

The attorney general’s statement⁤ notes that digital content uncovered during the⁤ inquiry was analyzed and found⁤ to include ​images of⁣ passports belonging to individuals alleged to ‌have ties with Imamoglu and foreign nationals.

The⁢ statement adds that this information was exchanged through encrypted‌ dialog ⁣apps, which investigators have classified as espionage activities.
