Taiwan’s Foreign Minister: I Am Not Concerned About Trump and Xi Meeting

Taiwan’s Foreign Minister, Joseph Wu, said he is not worried about President Donald Trump’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping and believes Washington will not abandon Taiwan, according to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr news agency and Reuters.
Meanwhile, The New York Times reported that during the meeting with Trump, Xi aims not only to negotiate on trade tensions between the two countries but also pursue a long-term goal: reducing Washington’s support for Taiwan.
The report indicates that Trump has stated he wants to focus on trade issues in his meeting with Xi in South Korea, even if the Chinese leader raises the topic of Taiwan.
The New York Times added that this encounter offers an opportunity to clarify Trump’s stance on Taiwan. Experts say Xi’s main objective is to get Trump to clearly state that the United States does not support Taiwanese independence.
the American outlet explained that Taiwan relies heavily on US political and military backing. Any comments from Trump interpreted as weakening this support could be leveraged by Beijing in future negotiations. Experts suggest that if Trump explicitly declares US opposition to Taiwanese independence, it would constitute a significant victory for beijing and could shape China’s subsequent policies toward Taiwan.
