Russian Ambassador to Iran: Reimposing Sanctions on Iran Is Unacceptable

According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr news Agency, Alexey Dedov told the Russian news agency TASS that Russia and Iran remain in constant contact to resolve the crisis created by Western countries against Iran’s nuclear program.
He emphasized comprehensive support for Iran and underlined the need for a long-term diplomatic and political solution to resolve the nuclear dispute between Iran and the West.
The Russian ambassador in Tehran described efforts by the European ”Troika” to reinstate UN Security Council sanctions on Iran as legally questionable and procedurally indefensible. He added that no legitimate country within the international community will be influenced by such pressure or adhere to these sanctions.
Iran’s peaceful nuclear program has faced international pressure as 2005. In response, the UN Security Council imposed sanctions on Tehran targeting economic, banking, export controls-particularly in energy and nuclear industries.
Following the signing of the JCPOA in July 2015, most of these sanctions were suspended conditional on limiting Iran’s nuclear activities. However, after Washington withdrew from the JCPOA in May 2018, it reinstated its own unilateral sanctions and sought to enforce international penalties against Iran.
When JCPOA restrictions expired, Europe and America attempted not to normalize relations with iran but rather sought thru Security Council mechanisms and previous resolutions to restore UN sanctions. Russia and China consider these moves illegal and unacceptable, stressing that such pressures create no legal obligations for other countries.
The UN Security Council’s nuclear-related sanctions against Iran were renewed on September 29, 2025. This followed activation of the snapback mechanism under JCPOA after failing to pass a resolution extending sanction suspensions at the Security Council. Consequently, all previous nuclear-related measures lifted under Resolution 2231 in 2015 were reinstated.
In response to Western hostility, tehran announced it would halt cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and cancel its Cairo agreement.
