Morgan Ortagus, the U.S.envoy to Lebanon, held talks with President Joseph Aoun regarding the Lebanese army’s plan known as the “monopoly on arms,” according to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Al-Ahed via Mehr News Agency.
During the meeting, Ortagus deliberately declined to allow journalists’ cameras inside. She signaled that her role in Lebanon was limited to military and security matters until the arrival of a new U.S. ambassador in Beirut, setting political issues aside for now.
Ortagus also met with Nabih Berri, Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, to discuss developments in southern Lebanon.
Al-Ahed reported that Ortagus presented Berri with two options: direct negotiations with Israel or indirect talks concerning southern border issues.
Berri responded by affirming that a follow-up committee is tasked with implementing ceasefire decisions and mutual agreements. He stressed that Lebanon fulfills its obligations and remains committed to these decisions. What remains necessary is obligating Israel-the enemy-to abide by the agreement.
Sources from Ain al-Tineh described the meeting as positive. Contrary to earlier threats circulating thru local media and regional satellite networks before this encounter, constructive dialog took place between both parties.
