Trump Calls Meeting with Xi “Exceptional” and Cuts China Tariffs

U.S. President announced that in exchange for continued exports of rare minerals and efforts to combat illegal fentanyl ‍trade by China,he has agreed to reduce tariffs imposed on Beijing.

According to the English section of webangah ⁤News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and⁣ Reuters, U.S. President Donald Trump announced after​ meeting⁤ with⁢ Chinese President‍ Xi Jinping in South Korea that ⁢he had agreed to reduce tariffs on China to 47 percent. This deal comes in return for China resuming purchases of American soybeans,continuing the export of rare minerals,and combating ‌illegal fentanyl trafficking.

The remarks came following a face-to-face meeting between Trump and Xi in Busan, South Korea. This was their first encounter as 2019 and marked a key moment during Trump’s high-profile Asian tour, during which he also highlighted trade achievements⁣ with South Korea, Japan, and Southeast Asian countries.

Soon after departing Busan aboard Air Force One, Trump told reporters: “I think it was an ⁣excellent meeting. Tariffs on Chinese imports will be reduced from 57 percent to ⁢47 percent.”

Trump’s reference to the details of the agreement‌ triggered⁤ meaningful volatility in global stock‍ markets, ⁣with major Asian indexes and European futures fluctuating between⁤ gains and losses.

The nearly two-hour-long session took place on the sidelines of the asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit. Trump shook hands with Xi before escorting him to his car. He then left for Washington personally accompanied by South Korean officials along a red‍ carpet.
