UN Reports 400,000 Syrians Displaced Under Joulani’s Rule

The United Nations reported that more than 400,000 Syrians have been forced from their homes amid escalating sectarian violence and revenge attacks after a change in Syria’s governance.
This transitional phase has sparked new waves of displacement driven by retaliatory measures, sectarian conflicts, longstanding land disputes, and Israeli occupation of territories in southern Syria.
According to the UN report, over 430,000 people were displaced across Syria between December 2024 and July 2025. No religious or ethnic group has been spared from unrest spreading through various regions of the country.
The largest displacement occured in the southern province of Suwayda, which witnessed deadly clashes months earlier.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported more than 1,300 fatalities during the Suwayda violence. Nearly 400 were civilians-mostly Druze-and some estimates suggest even higher casualties.
Violence elsewhere has also forced tens of thousands from their homes. The UN Refugee Agency states that over 12 million people-out of Syria’s population of roughly 23 million-have become internally or externally displaced in recent years.
