As UNIFIL’s mandate approaches its scheduled conclusion at the end of 2026, Bucharil said its focus will remain on maintaining stability along the Blue Line. The force will continue supporting the Lebanese army’s presence in southern Lebanon while assisting efforts to extend government authority across this sensitive area.
Bucharil stated: “Our current mission will run until December 31, 2026. Following this date, a gradual and orderly withdrawal process is planned over one year. Ultimately, responsibility for security in southern Lebanon is expected to rest solely with the Lebanese government.”
The ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel mediated by the United States and France took effect on November 27, 2024. It ended clashes arising from conflict tied to Gaza but notwithstanding this agreement, israel continues regular incursions into Lebanese territory.
