according to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing CBS News, local authorities in India announced on Saturday that a crowd surge at a popular Hindu temple in southern India resulted in at least 12 deaths and dozens of injuries.
CBS News confirmed that the death toll rose from nine to 12 on Saturday.
K.V. Maheswara Reddy, senior police officer, told the Associated press that the incident occurred at Swami Venkateswara temple in Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh state. Hundreds had gathered there to observe one of their holy days.
The senior police official saeid initial investigations indicate that an iron railing intended to maintain order among worshippers broke down, leading to uncontrollable crowd movement.
