Slovenia Supports Establishment of Palestinian State; Labels Gaza Situation as Genocide

Nataša Pirc Musar, President of Slovenia, told Al Jazeera on Sunday that her country holds a firm and progressive position supporting the establishment of the Palestinian state and a two-state solution. “I was the first president within the European Union to condemn the genocide in Gaza,” she said. “We stand with humanity in Gaza, and this is what the world needs right now.”
She continued, “The massacre and genocide occurring in Gaza are unacceptable. we believe in human rights and need more politicians who understand the suffering of civilians there.”
Pirc Musar also warned against efforts to undermine the International Criminal Court (ICC), which issued an arrest warrant for netanyahu on charges of crimes against humanity. She noted that such attempts would destroy international law. “Israel blocks aid from reaching Gaza under false pretenses,” she added.
She further called for international peacekeeping forces to be deployed under united Nations supervision in Gaza. Highlighting divisions within Europe over Gaza, Pirc Musar observed that EU member states are not united on this issue despite their unified stance against war in Ukraine.
The European Union supports ukraine by all means possible in its conflict with russia. Many EU members back an international troop presence there. We emphasize Ukraine’s urgent need to join the EU for lasting peace in Europe,” she said.
Pirc Musar drew attention to humanitarian crises elsewhere: “Twenty-five million people suffer from hunger in Sudan-the situation there is unacceptable.” She criticized insufficient international efforts aimed at assisting Sudan.
