Iraq Sees Sharp Rise in Election Turnout; Participation Climbs for First Time in 20 Years

The English section of webangah News Agency reports, citing Mehr News Agency and Deutsche Welle, that voter turnout in Iraq’s recent parliamentary elections reached 55 percent. This figure shocked political analysts who had not anticipated such an upward trend after two decades of electoral participation decline.
Since 2005, Iraq’s parliamentary election turnout has fallen steadily from 70 percent in 2005 to 62 percent in 2010, then to 60 percent in 2014.
The elections in 2018 saw a further drop to 44 percent participation, with the lowest level recorded at just 40 percent during the 2021 elections.
Contrastingly, the upcoming 2025 election reflects a notable 15-percent increase despite calls for a boycott by Muqtada al-Sadr’s movement.
