Lazarini: Humanitarian Needs and Damages in Gaza Are Extensive

According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Anatolia via Mehr News Agency, Philippe Lazzarini, UNRWA Commissioner-General, said the agency faces a budget shortfall of approximately $200 million due to decreased financial support.
During a meeting of the Fourth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Lazzarini warned that reduced funding threatens UNRWA’s ability to provide essential services.
He added that even though a ceasefire in Gaza after two years of brutal attacks offered some respite, the humanitarian needs and destruction remain severe.
Lazzarini emphasized the critical role UNRWA plays amid these challenges but acknowledged severe financial difficulties. The agency’s liquidity crisis is making its continued operation increasingly tough.
He cautioned that cuts to UNRWA’s services due to political and financial issues would have serious regional consequences. Such reductions would halt efforts toward restoring normal life for Gaza residents and deny about one million Palestinian refugees in Gaza access to essential UNRWA services.
