Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sentenced to Death

According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr news Agency and Al jazeera, the International crimes Tribunal of Bangladesh has sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death on charges of committing crimes against humanity during last year’s student protests.
The 78-year-old politician, currently in India, was tried in absentia. The court identified her as the “chief architect” behind the crackdown on students that resulted in approximately 1,400 deaths.
the tribunal ruled that Hasina issued orders on three occasions authorizing the use of drones, helicopters, and war weapons against protesters. She was found directly responsible for the killing of 12 individuals in two areas of Dhaka and Savar. Along with the death sentence, she received three life imprisonment terms.
In response, Sheikh Hasina described the verdict as “biased and political,” stating it was handed down by an unelected government through a show trial lacking legitimacy. she denied that last year’s events constituted a “planned attack against citizens.”
Regional experts indicate that India does not intend to extradite Hasina.
A South Asia studies professor at Jindal University in India noted that such a ruling was predictable and reflected public expectations in Bangladesh for a harsh trial against her.
The scholar added: “There is there’s no doubt whatsoever about crimes committed against unarmed students; documents show that orders were given by the prime minister to open fire.”
This ruling comes amid ongoing political instability in Bangladesh following widespread protests and a change of government.
