Iraq Parliament Dissolved; Caretaker Government Assumes Duties

The Iraqi Federal Court declared on Monday that the fifth session of Iraq’s parliament has ended. The government will continue to operate as a caretaker administration until the establishment of a new cabinet, according to webangah News Agency, citing Iraqi news agency WAFA and Mehr News Agency.
The court’s statement added that the President of Iraq will also remain in office until after the new parliamentary elections are completed.
The ruling was issued during a session chaired by Munther Ibrahim Hussein, president of the Federal Supreme Court, along with other court members.
This session was convened at the request of Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid for an interpretation of Article 56 of iraq’s Constitution.
According to the Federal Court’s statement, each parliamentary term lasts four calendar years from its first session and concludes at the end of its fourth year.
Under Iraq’s Constitution, election day marks the official end of each parliamentary term. From this date onward, both legislative and executive branches continue solely in a caretaker capacity until newly elected officials assume office.
