U.S. Calls for Elections in Ukraine

According to the English section of webangah news Agency, citing Mehr News Agency, Kate Kuhlkot, the US Special Presidential Envoy for Ukraine, told Fox News in an interview: “There is an crucial point in the US plan-it mandates that elections must be held.”
Discussing former President Donald Trump’s peace plan to end the war in Ukraine, she added: “the plan clearly states that Ukraine must conduct elections within 100 days. Based on assessments from those I have spoken with, this period could possibly be shortened to about 90 days. This is a key condition of the plan.”
Kuhlkot also noted that the US might pressure Ukraine to make territorial concessions in exchange for security guarantees.
According to Ukraine’s constitution, presidential elections were scheduled for March 2024 and parliamentary elections for October 2023. However, due to martial law declared after Russia’s invasion in February 2022,all elections were postponed. President volodymyr Zelensky’s government has repeatedly stressed that holding elections during wartime is legally and security-wise unfeasible.
Consequently, terms for both the presidency and parliament have been extended without new voting. This situation has sparked broad debates about the political legitimacy of Zelensky’s government and become a major point of contention both domestically and internationally.
