UN Report: Humanitarian Crisis Persists in Syria Despite Refugee Returns

A new United Nations report reveals that despite the return of over a million refugees and two million internally displaced persons, humanitarian conditions in Syria remain critical. The report highlights severe poverty, limited access to essential services, and damaged infrastructure as major challenges.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, a recent United Nations report indicates that the humanitarian crisis in Syria persists despite the return of more than one million refugees from neighboring countries and approximately two million internally displaced persons to their original areas.

The UN report states that over 70% of displaced Syrians live in extreme poverty, facing limited access to basic services, education, and employment opportunities. Essential infrastructure, including homes, schools, water networks, and healthcare centers, have been either destroyed or are under severe strain. Many returnees have found themselves in areas lacking basic services or with uninhabitable homes. Security risks, such as landmines and instability, continue to pose significant threats.

The United Nations warns that millions of displaced people have lost their livelihoods and are unable to meet basic needs such as drinking water, electricity, food, medicine, and housing. This economic vulnerability exposes them to risks like child labor, gender-based violence, early marriage, and other forms of abuse.

The report also highlights the difficult conditions faced by Syrian refugees in neighboring countries. Over 90% of Syrian refugees in Lebanon and Turkey are unable to cover their living expenses, and in Jordan, 93% of Syrian families are in debt to meet basic needs.

Children bear a disproportionate burden of the crisis, with half of the Syrian refugee population being under 18 years old. Many have only known war and displacement. Their access to education is inconsistent, and the risks of child labor and early marriage are increasing.
