Federica Mogherini Released After Questioning in EU Corruption Probe

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Federica Mogherini, the former High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and current head of the College of Europe, was released from Belgian police custody early Wednesday. Mogherini and Stefano Sannino, former Secretary-General of the European External Action Service, were taken into custody on Tuesday as part of an investigation into alleged corruption within the EU’s diplomatic service.
Belgian police conducted a large-scale operation targeting the alleged misuse of European Union funds, leading to Mogherini’s detention. The arrest of the former EU foreign policy chief involved raids on the College of Europe and the European External Action Service as part of an inquiry into fraud related to the training of young diplomats using EU budgetary resources.
Prior to Mogherini’s release, Belgian authorities had already detained three other suspects in connection with the ongoing case.
