Lebanese PM Rejects Peace Talks with Israel Amidst Tensions

Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam has stated that Lebanon is not seeking peace negotiations with Israel, emphasizing that normalization of relations depends on the overall peace process. Salam also addressed concerns about potential escalation amid ongoing Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam has affirmed that Lebanon is not pursuing peace talks with Israel, linking any normalization of relations to the broader peace process. In an interview, Salam told Al Jazeera that Lebanon has received messages from Israel regarding potential escalation, though without specific timelines.

Salam noted that envoys visiting Beirut assessed the situation as dangerous and unstable. He reiterated his call for the disarmament of Hezbollah, stating, “We will not allow adventures that could lead us to a new war.” These remarks come as Israel continues its daily strikes on southern Lebanon, violating the ceasefire.

The Lebanese government, backed by the United States, is reportedly seeking the disarmament of the resistance. Salam also mentioned the appointment of Simon Karam, Lebanon’s former ambassador to Washington, as the country’s representative to the ceasefire monitoring committee. He described the inclusion of a former Lebanese diplomat in the committee as politically correct and nationally supported, while criticizing what he called excessive commentary from Netanyahu regarding the appointment.
