Bolsonaro’s Son, Flavio, Nominated as Presidential Candidate for 2026 Election

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, son of ex-President Jair Bolsonaro, has been confirmed as the Liberal Party’s candidate for the 2026 presidential race. Jair Bolsonaro, currently incarcerated, voiced his endorsement of his son’s candidacy in a formal statement, tasking Flavio with continuing the Bolsonaro family’s “national project.”
Brazil’s elections are scheduled for October 4, 2026. With Jair Bolsonaro legally barred from running until 2030, Flavio is now positioned as the political heir of the country’s right wing.
Flavio, 44, has served in the Brazilian Senate since 2019 and previously represented the state of Rio de Janeiro. Political experts suggest that Flavio’s selection aims to consolidate his father’s voter base, though it could potentially alienate more moderate elements within the party.
This decision sets the stage for a renewed rivalry between the Bolsonaro family and current leftist President Lula da Silva, who is seeking a fourth term and currently leads in polling. The Liberal Party officially declared that Jair Bolsonaro approved Flavio’s nomination, effectively ending consideration of all alternative candidates for the upcoming election.
Given the Bolsonaro family’s close ties to Donald Trump, the former President of the United States, there are speculations about potential interference by Washington in Brazil’s future elections.
