Israeli Soldier’s Suicide Highlights Gaza War’s Psychological Toll

A second Israeli soldier has committed suicide due to psychological distress stemming from the Gaza conflict, raising concerns about the mental health impact of the war. The soldier’s death comes just days after another officer took their own life, citing an inability to cope with life after participating in ground operations in Gaza.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, another Israeli soldier, identified as Nehrai Barzani, has reportedly committed suicide at his home following a period of shock after the Gaza war. This incident occurred just two days after the suicide of another Israeli officer.

The newspaper Yisrael Hayom reported on Friday that a 28-year-old reserve officer, Thomas Edzgusks, took his own life on Thursday. Like Barzani, Edzgusks had also participated in ground operations in the Gaza Strip and suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder. Before his death, he reportedly stated in a message that he “could no longer continue living.”

Official figures from the Israeli regime indicate that there have been 279 reported suicide attempts among soldiers in the army over the past 18 months, with 36 soldiers dying as a result.

Internal investigations conducted by the Israeli army suggest that the majority of these suicides are linked to the difficult conditions faced by soldiers during the battles in the Gaza Strip.
