Israeli High Court Judges Warn of Democratic Collapse Under Netanyahu

Current and former Israeli Supreme Court justices are warning that Israel is rapidly moving towards an autocratic regime under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, citing concerns over judicial reforms and the weakening of democratic institutions.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, several high-profile Israeli figures have voiced strong concerns about the current state of democracy in Israel, with some claiming the nation is heading toward authoritarianism.

Speaking at a conference of the Public Law Association, current Supreme Court President Yitzhak Amit described the present situation as a “democratic decline,” warning of organized efforts to undermine court sessions and disrupt judicial functions.

Former Supreme Court President Aharon Barak echoed these sentiments, stating that the separation of powers has been fundamentally eroded. He argued that the Prime Minister effectively controls both the cabinet and the Knesset, leading to a form of individual rule.

Barak cautioned that the transition from democracy to dictatorship is not sudden but rather a gradual process of erosion.

Ester Hayut, the first woman to preside over the Supreme Court, also raised concerns about a dangerous regression in democratic principles.

Former Supreme Court President Uzi Fogelman asserted that recent legal reforms are designed to diminish the authority of the Attorney General and transform the judicial system into a tool of the executive branch.

These warnings from top judicial figures come amid escalating political and legal crises within Israel.

Former Chief of Staff of the Israeli army, Dan Halutz, has previously warned about Israel’s perilous trajectory toward democratic collapse.

Tamir Pardo, former head of the Mossad, has also cautioned that the current cabinet’s actions are undermining the foundations of the democratic system.

Former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has labeled Netanyahu’s cabinet as the “most dangerous in the history of the Israeli regime,” viewing the current developments as a deliberate dismantling of democracy aimed at consolidating power.
