African Union Condemns Failed Military Coup in Benin

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the African Union Commission Chairperson, Mahmoud Ali Youssef, issued a statement on Sunday condemning the attempted military coup in Benin “in the strongest terms and without any ambiguity.”
Youssef further stated his deep concern about the rising number of coups and attempted coups in various parts of the African continent.
Earlier reports indicated that military personnel in Benin had announced the seizure of power via national television.
Amidst a series of military coups in West Africa, it was reported that a group of soldiers in Benin appeared on national television to announce the dissolution of the government and all state institutions, effectively removing the President from power.
The group identified themselves as the “Military Committee for Reconstruction.”
The coup was allegedly led by army officer Pascal Tigri, who declared himself the head of the “Military Committee for Reconstruction.”
However, Benin’s Foreign Minister told Reuters that a group of soldiers had attempted a coup, but it had failed. He claimed that a significant portion of the army and national guard remained loyal to the government, and the situation was under control.
