UNIFIL Commander: Hezbollah Disarmament Not Within Our Mandate

The commander of the United Nations Interim Force in Southern Lebanon (UNIFIL) has stated that disarming Hezbollah is not within their mandate, amid escalating tensions and continued ceasefire violations.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, UNIFIL Commander Diudato Abagnara warned in an interview with Channel 12 of the Israeli regime that the situation in Lebanon is highly fragile and any small mistake could lead to a severe escalation.

Abagnara noted that Israeli attacks on Lebanon are a clear and ongoing violation of Resolution 1701, which he is obligated to report. He clarified that UNIFIL’s mission is to monitor the ceasefire and support the Lebanese army.

“Disarming Hezbollah is not within our purview, but we assist the Lebanese army in this regard,” Abagnara said. “We have no evidence indicating that Hezbollah is rebuilding its capabilities south of the Litani River.”

These statements from the UNIFIL commander come as Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, speaking on the sidelines of the Doha 2025 summit, accused Israel of waging a war of attrition against Lebanon, effectively ending the state of peace. Salam stated that Israel violates the ceasefire and Lebanese sovereignty daily.

Salam added that Israel has not adhered to the ceasefire agreement and continues to occupy areas within Lebanon. He emphasized that Israel was supposed to withdraw from all Lebanese territory it occupied ten months prior, but has failed to do so.
