Benin Undergoes Military Coup Amidst Reported Explosions

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Benin’s government has been overthrown by the military in a coup coinciding with reports of explosions in Cotonou, the nation’s capital.
The coup occurred shortly after reports of a failed prior coup, as French aircraft were allegedly seen flying over the city. Some media outlets report hearing at least six explosions within minutes in Cotonou.
Other reports suggest the explosions were the result of airstrikes conducted by the French and Nigerian air forces. Beninese officials have not yet issued a statement.
Earlier, Reuters reported that the military in Benin announced on national television that they had seized power. The Associated Press reported that soldiers appeared on national television to announce the dissolution of the government and its institutions, and the removal of the president, amid a series of military takeovers in West Africa.
The group identified itself as the “Military Committee for Reconstruction.” The coup is reportedly led by Army officer Pascal Tigri, who has appointed himself head of the committee.
Prior to the coup announcement, Agence France-Presse reported that twelve soldiers had been arrested in Benin, including individuals involved in the initial coup attempt.
