Nigeria Intervenes to Quell Coup Attempt in Benin

Reports indicate that the government of Benin has requested military assistance from Nigeria to suppress a coup led by an army officer who has fortified himself in a military base in Cotonou, the capital.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Nigerian fighter jets have reportedly bombed several targets within Benin’s territory in an effort to eliminate the coup leader and his allies.

Earlier reports from Benin indicate that military personnel announced the takeover of power via national television, declaring the dissolution of the government and all state institutions, as well as the removal of the president. The group identified itself as the “Military Committee for Reconstruction.”

The coup is reportedly led by army officer Pascal Tigri, who has declared himself the head of the “Military Committee for Reconstruction.” Sources within the African nation’s military and security sectors report that twelve soldiers have been arrested in Benin, including those involved in the coup attempt.
