President Vladimir Putin, on February 21, 2022, recognized the independence of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics in the Donbas region, citing the West’s disregard for Moscow’s security concerns.

Three days later, on February 24, 2022, Putin initiated what he termed a “special operation” against Ukraine, escalating tensions between Moscow and Kyiv into military confrontation.

In response, the United States and Western nations have imposed extensive sanctions on Russia and provided billions of dollars in military aid to Ukraine.
