Russia Warns U.S. Against Military Intervention in Venezuela

Russia has cautioned the United States against initiating a full-scale conflict in Venezuela, citing concerns that such action could destabilize the entire Western Hemisphere. The warning comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Caracas.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova voiced concerns over escalating tensions between the United States and Venezuela in response to the release of the latest U.S. National Security Strategy document.

Zakharova stated that Moscow hopes Washington will refrain from instigating a full-fledged conflict with Venezuela, warning that such a move could plunge the entire Western Hemisphere into chaos. The diplomat noted that certain provisions within the new U.S. National Security Strategy document bear resemblance to the Roosevelt Corollary.

The Roosevelt Corollary, an addition to the Monroe Doctrine, asserted the right of the United States to intervene in the domestic affairs of Latin American countries. In recent months, the U.S. has increased its military presence in the Caribbean Sea and along the Venezuelan border, purportedly to combat drug trafficking.

Washington’s targeting of vessels near Venezuelan borders, allegedly in the name of combating drug smugglers, has drawn scrutiny. The White House has provided limited details regarding the claim that individuals targeted in over 20 attacks in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific were actually involved in drug trafficking. Experts have suggested that even if the targets were indeed drug smugglers, such attacks could be considered “extrajudicial killings.”
