US Congressman Introduces Bill to Withdraw from NATO

Republican Representative Thomas Massie has introduced a bill in Congress to withdraw the United States from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), labeling it a relic of the Cold War.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Representative Thomas Massie, a Republican from the U.S. House of Representatives, has announced the introduction of a bill proposing the withdrawal of Washington from NATO.

In a message posted on X, Massie described NATO as a “Cold War relic,” stating, “We should exit NATO and spend these funds on our national defense, not socialist countries.”

According to the Congressman, the bill to repeal U.S. membership in the North Atlantic Treaty has been submitted to Congress.

The proposal asserts that European NATO member states possess the economic and military capabilities to defend themselves, and despite the alliance’s diminished purpose, its expansion has continued since 1999.

The document also specifies that NATO no longer aligns with U.S. national security interests.

It remains uncertain when the House of Representatives will consider the bill, as it must first be evaluated by specialized committees.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was established in 1949 with the signing of a treaty by the foreign ministers of 12 countries, including the United States and several Western European nations, and currently comprises 32 member states.

Russia has cited NATO’s eastward expansion and its proximity to Russian borders as a primary cause of the conflict in Ukraine.
