Brazilian Congress Debates Reducing Prison Sentence for Bolsonaro Amidst Tensions

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Brazil’s Congress passed a contentious proposal in the early hours of Wednesday that could significantly shorten the prison sentence of ex-President Jair Bolsonaro. The session was marked by intense verbal and physical altercations among lawmakers.
Prior to the vote, leftist Congressman Glauber Braga occupied the speaker’s chair in protest against what he termed an attempt to legitimize a coup. Police intervened, removing him from the chamber. The live broadcast of the session was temporarily suspended, and journalists were asked to leave the floor.
The approved bill, now headed to the Brazilian Senate, has the potential to reduce Bolsonaro’s 27-year sentence for allegedly orchestrating a coup against the current administration to approximately two years. Some pro-government representatives have criticized the move as legislative action to save a convicted individual.
Bolsonaro’s supporters argue that this reduction in punishment is the first step toward rectifying the process after failing to achieve a full pardon. The proposal could also lead to the amnesty of around 100 people convicted for their involvement in the January 8, 2023, raid on government buildings.
Meanwhile, Bolsonaro’s legal team, citing his deteriorating health, has renewed calls for his hospitalization and requested that he be placed under house arrest for humanitarian reasons.
Bolsonaro, a right-wing politician, maintains close ties with Donald Trump, the current President of the United States. The White House has expressed support for his release.
