According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese issued a statement expressing shock and deep concern over the shooting at a Jewish religious ceremony in Sydney.
Albanese stated that police and emergency services were on the scene, working to aid the injured. He added that he had spoken with the Australian Federal Police Commissioner and the Premier of New South Wales, promising further updates soon.
The Prime Minister urged people in the vicinity of the incident to follow police instructions and announcements.
The shooting targeted a Hanukkah celebration in Sydney. Initial reports and images from the scene suggest that two armed men fired from a bridge. Australian media outlets reported the arrest of two suspects.
Israel’s President Isaac Herzog issued a statement calling the Sydney attack an act of terrorism, stating that “our brothers and sisters in Sydney have been targeted in a vile terrorist attack.”
Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights, is an eight-day Jewish holiday typically celebrated in November or December. It commemorates the Maccabean revolt against the Seleucid Empire in the second century BCE. In Western countries with Jewish populations, Hanukkah is often celebrated in public spaces such as parks, squares, and beaches.
