Iraqi Sunni Political Groups to Hold Decisive Meeting on Parliament Speaker

Sunni political groups in Iraq are preparing to hold a crucial meeting at Al-Abassi’s residence to decide on candidates for the parliament speaker position, aiming for a consensus or vote within their political council.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the National Political Council, comprised of Sunni parties in Iraq, is considering introducing two candidates for the role of parliament speaker. A final decision will be reached either through political agreement or a vote within the council.

Firas al-Jarisi, a member of the Sunni ‘Azm Alliance, stated that the selection criterion for the parliament speaker is not based on the number of seats held, but on achieving consensus within the Sunni National Political Council, based on previously emphasized conditions and characteristics.

Al-Jarisi added that if there is agreement on more than one candidate, the decision will be made through constitutional mechanisms within the Iraqi Parliament via a voting process.

Al-Jarisi emphasized that the National Political Council is scheduled to hold its meeting next week at the residence of Thabet al-Abassi, head of the Hasm Alliance, during which the names of the candidates for the parliament speakership will be determined, with the possibility of introducing two figures. So far, no candidate has been officially introduced by the National Political Council, while the names circulating in some media outlets are within the framework of analysis and predictions and do not constitute final decisions.

Concurrently, Muhannad Muhammad Zaidan, a member of the Azm Coalition, announced that the meeting next week at the residence of Thabet al-Abassi, head of the Hasad Coalition, is aimed at completing political consultations. The purpose of the in-depth consultations is to reach a final agreement on the mechanism for electing the speaker of parliament.
