US Treasury Authorizes Oil Sales from Russia’s Sakhalin-2 Project

The United States Treasury Department has issued a license authorizing the sale of oil from Russia’s Sakhalin-2 project until June 18, 2026. This move will likely enable the continued production of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the project.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the U.S. Treasury Department has authorized the sale of oil from the Sakhalin-2 project in Russia until June 18 of next year. This action potentially ensures the ongoing production of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the site.

This authorization is particularly significant for Japan, a key U.S. ally that sources approximately nine percent of its LNG from Russia.

The Treasury Department issued a general license Wednesday for transactions related to Sakhalin-2, providing an exemption to sanctions initially imposed on the project by former President Joe Biden in 2022.
