Italy Rejects Sending Troops to Ukraine, Cites EU Sanctions’ Economic Impact

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has stated that Italy will not send troops to Ukraine as part of any multinational force. Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini also argued that EU sanctions against Russia have negatively impacted European economies.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni affirmed Wednesday night that Italy will not deploy its forces to Ukraine under the banner of a multinational coalition.

Echoing this sentiment, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Matteo Salvini, in an interview with Rete 4 television, asserted that the 19 sanction packages imposed by the European Union on Russia have weakened the economic stability of European nations.

Salvini elaborated, stating that nearly four years into the conflict, the extensive sanctions, initially intended to cripple Russia, have instead harmed European economies and driven up energy costs for Italian citizens. This impact explains his cautious stance regarding the rearmament and supply of weapons to Ukraine.

Salvini further noted the historical failures of past leaders: “Neither Hitler nor Napoleon could bring Moscow to its knees, and I doubt that Kaja Kallas, the EU’s foreign policy chief, French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, or German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will be able to do so.”

He concluded by suggesting that Europe’s primary threat originates not from the east, but from the south, specifically from the influx of illegal migrants into the continent.
