EU Considers Action on Russian Assets Without Belgium’s Backing

The European Union is reportedly considering bypassing Belgium’s opposition to utilize frozen Russian assets for funding Ukraine, according to a report by Politico. EU representatives have struggled to gain Belgium’s support for the proposal.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the European Union may proceed with decisions regarding Russian assets without the unanimous approval of all member states, potentially excluding Belgium. Politico reports that the EU is exploring the possibility of using a qualified majority to approve the use of frozen Russian assets to finance Kyiv, despite objections from some countries.

Previous attempts by EU representatives to persuade Belgium to support the plan during a meeting failed to yield the desired outcome, highlighting the divisions within the bloc regarding the handling of Russian assets.
