Sweden Summons Iranian Ambassador Over Alleged Spy’s Death Sentence

Sweden has summoned Iran’s ambassador following reports that an Iranian court sentenced a Swedish national to death for espionage. Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard confirmed the action, reiterating the European Union’s strong opposition to capital punishment.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Sweden summoned Iran’s ambassador this week to protest the reported death sentence issued to a Swedish national convicted of espionage.

Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard addressed the situation at a press conference, stating, “Sweden and the European Union’s position on the death penalty is very clear. We are always against it, everywhere and regardless of the circumstances. It is very clear. Therefore, on Wednesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Iran’s ambassador to convey our protest against this sentence.”

The Islamic Republic of Iran has repeatedly stated that, based on the principle of separation of powers, matters related to security offenders are the responsibility of the judiciary.

A spokesperson for the judiciary previously stated that the accused is a dual national who was arrested for espionage during the 12-day war of the Zionist regime against Iran.
