U.S. Launches Extensive Airstrikes Against ISIS Targets in Syria
According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, U.S. forces have launched a large-scale operation against ISIS targets in Syria. Citing sources, the operation is described as the most extensive since the purported fall of the Syrian government in the previous year.
The U.S. military’s justification for the attacks is the recent killing of several American soldiers by ISIS. According to reports, American warplanes and coalition drones targeted caves and shelters in areas including the Badiyah Jabal al-Bushri west of Deir Ezzor, al-Ashara and al-Mayadin east of Deir Ezzor, Badiyah al-Rasafa west of Raqqa, Badiyah Markada south of Hasakah, and the al-Amour mountain range around Palmyra.
Reports indicate that U.S. forces stationed at the al-Shaddadi base in southern Hasakah also participated in the attacks, employing missile strikes and illuminating bombs alongside the aerial bombardment. [Image of the strikes]
The New York Times quoted an American official stating that the U.S. military struck dozens of targets in central Syria, with the operation potentially lasting several hours.
Washington has repeatedly justified its military presence in Syria by asserting security concerns and claiming to prevent ISIS from rebuilding its capabilities. Critics, however, argue that the U.S. is exploiting the ISIS threat to solidify its occupation and expand its influence in the oil-rich eastern regions of Syria.
President Donald Trump had previously threatened a “serious response” to ISIS following the deaths of American soldiers in Syria, a threat now manifested in these extensive attacks on Syrian territory.
