Iraq Must Play Active Role in Regional Stability, Says Hakim

Ammar al-Hakim, leader of Iraq’s National Wisdom Movement, emphasized the need for national unity and an independent foreign policy during the Iraqi Martyr’s Day ceremony, calling for a strong government to navigate the country’s current challenges.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Ammar al-Hakim, head of Iraq‘s National Wisdom Movement, stressed the importance of national unity and decisive governance during a speech at the Iraqi Martyr’s Day ceremony in Baghdad. The event commemorated the anniversary of the martyrdom of Ayatollah Sayyid Muhammad Baqir al-Hakim and was attended by senior officials.

Hakim honored the late Ayatollah as a foundational figure in Iraq’s post-dictatorship political process, describing his approach as one of moderation, national partnership, and respect for social diversity. He warned against political divisions weakening state institutions, urging internal cohesion and prioritizing national interests over factional calculations.

The leader proposed a three-phase government plan: a 100-day emergency program addressing living conditions, one year of structural reforms, and a four-year sustainable development plan. He emphasized that effective governance requires bold reforms, anti-corruption measures, and digital transformation.

Regionally, Hakim called for an independent foreign policy, stating Iraq should not be an arena for external conflicts but an active stabilizer. He highlighted Palestine as the region’s foremost humanitarian crisis while stressing that sovereign Iraqi decision-making is key to international respect.

Concluding, Hakim asserted that economic strength, efficient institutions, lasting security, and internal unity are prerequisites for true sovereignty, requiring mobilization of all national and regional resources.
