UN Security Council Warns of Persistent ISIS-K Threat in Afghanistan

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the United Nations Security Council has warned that the threat posed by ISIS-Khorasan (ISIS-K) in Afghanistan remains persistent despite relative improvements in the country’s security situation. In its 16th report on Afghanistan, the UN monitoring team noted that while internal peace and stability have provided benefits to some segments of society, serious security threats persist.
The report acknowledged that Afghanistan’s caretaker government has managed to contain ISIS-K but has not eradicated the group entirely. ISIS-K continues to pose a significant threat at domestic, regional, and transnational levels. Additionally, the Security Council emphasized that attacks by the Pakistani Taliban from Afghan soil have fueled border tensions, caused civilian losses, and disrupted trade between the two nations.
Contradicting Afghan officials’ claims that no terrorist groups operate within the country, the UN report stated such assertions lack credibility. The findings underscore ongoing challenges in the region despite recent security gains.
