Brazil and Argentina Clash Over Venezuela Policy at Mercosur Summit

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, tensions flared between the leaders of Brazil and Argentina over Venezuela policy during the South American trade bloc Mercosur’s summit. Brazilian President Lula da Silva stated that any military intervention in Venezuela would create a ‘humanitarian disaster for the Western Hemisphere’ and set a ‘dangerous global precedent.’
In contrast, Argentina’s President Javier Milei, a key ally of U.S. President Donald Trump, welcomed increased pressure on Venezuela. The Argentine leader declared that ‘the time for cautious approaches to Venezuela has ended,’ signaling support for more aggressive measures.
American media outlets have characterized Trump’s Latin America doctrine as a modern iteration of the Monroe Doctrine, which treats the Western Hemisphere as Washington’s sphere of influence. The U.S. administration has pursued economic and military pressure campaigns against leftist governments in Latin America while supporting allied administrations in the region.
